General Register 1873-1879

Index to the

GENERAL REGISTER

Elgin County Land Registry Office
Elgin OGS Volume 2: 1873 – 1879

Introduction

This publication contains extractions from microfilmed copies the General Register books found at the Land Registry Office for Elgin County.

Volume 1 contains extractions from Book A (Instrument Numbers 1 to 140) and Book B (Instrument Numbers 141 to 465). These records are found on Genealogical Society of Utah Microfilm Number 0160545.

Elgin OGS will continue to extract from these records and publish them in Volumes.

What Are the General Registers?

In 1865/6 a series of record books were established in the Land Registry Office called the General Register. Wills, and several other types of instruments that did not specify a property description, were recorded in the General Register. The General Register does not contain the original documents signed by the person creating the document. The material contained in the General Registers are handwritten copies made by Land Registry Office clerks.

There is a general index and an index for each Volume or Book of the General Register. The index is not always alphabetical, but surnames are grouped at least by their beginning letter. In the early days of the General Register, all names in a Will were abstracted, not just the deceased, including executors.

The purpose of this series of publications by Elgin OGS is to expand that index by extracting what each document is about, and including names of witnesses.

The researcher should also consult another publication produced by Elgin OGS called Wills & Probates in Elgin County Land Registry Office Records . There you will find further information in the introduction regarding finding Wills and Probates in Land Registry Office records.

It should be noted that many of the Wills and Probates found in the General Register may also be found in an Estate File Index (1800 – 1900) compiled by the Elgin County Library and contained in a database on the LibraryÌs web page on the Internet. This Estate File was created from three sources: London District Surrogate Registry (1800 – 1839); Middlesex County Surrogate Court Register (1846 – 1853/4); and the Elgin County Surrogate Court Register (1859 – 1900). These three sources are also available on microfilm.

Wills would be filed in two or more sources (i.e. Surrogate Court and Land Registry Office), when the Will was required to transfer property. It is advisable to check both sources.

Types of Documents Found in the General Register

While the majority of the documents found in the General Register are Wills and Probates, there are several other types of documents recorded. Some of these are:

Indentures dealing with settling of estates

Power of Attorney

Insolvency

Guardianship of minor children

Alimony agreements

Pre-nuptial agreements

Partnership agreements

Bylaws

Corporate agreements (eg. Railroads and power companies)

General Register on Microfilm

Microfilmed copies of the General Register Index and the General Registers were purchased by Elgin OGS, with records beginning in 1866 to circa 1900. The actual volumes of the General Register are located at the Elgin County Land Registry Office.

The Elgin OGS microfilm collection is housed in the George Thorman Room of the St. Thomas Public Library.

These records were microfilmed by the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Genealogical Society of Utah), on 10 reels of microfilm, as follows:
