A Brief History of Cowal – McBride Cemetery

This cemetery is now nearly one hundred and fifty years in existence. The settlement of these back concessions of Dunwich started mainly during and after the 1840’s
Why was a cemetery started here, no where near any church?  We may never know for sure, however it was near the townline between Dunwich and Southwold, which was quite a main road from Iona north to the River and on to Longwood (Melbourne later on).  There was a definite need – Baptists could be buried at Iona near the church; Anglicans could bury in the Anglican cemeteries at Burwell Park or St. Peter’s. Some early settlers were buried at Fingal Cemetery, all quite a long way to travel.  In 1843 the first settler, John McBride, on the farm to the south of this location, was killed by a falling tree and had to be buried in Black’s Cemetery west of Wallacetown. Some early settlers in the northwest corner of the Cowal community were buried across the river in the Murray Cemetery.
John McCallum, who owned the farm where the cemetery started, was a community minded man.  His land was deep and suitable for graves, so he laid out about one acre for a cemetery, at the east side of a ravine which crossed his property facing onto the concession road, known then as the Fifth Concession and now as Aberdeen Line.  This is the part of the north cemetery laid out so each stone faces the east, considered a necessity in those days.  John McCallum sold his farm to Alfred Culver 14th September 1869, but retained the cemetery. Eight years later in 1877, he sold the one acre cemetery for $60.00 to David Crosson and Peter Duncanson. This deed sets out the procedure for annual meetings of plot holders and election of trustees.
The first trustees were David Crosson and Peter Duncanson. The early records of the cemetery were burned when the secretary, Peter Duncanson, lost his house to fire, so there is no record of the first survey and laying out of plots. It has been said that the first burial was that of Mrs. John McTavish (Nancy McLaren), who died 3rd May 1854.  However there is a stone in the cemetery for Peter McNabb, aged one year and four months, son of Archie McNabb, who died 26th February 1852.  So exactly who was buried here first or what year will never be known for sure.
In 1863 Cowal Post Office started in the home of Neil McBride, across the road to the east in Southwold, making this the centre of the community. A few years later Grant Silcox built a small general stone on the same lot in Dunwich, just east of the cemetery, bringing more people to the area. In the 1860’s and 70’s many people were buried in the new cemetery, the location of which was a convenience to the survivors.
After the records were burned the trustees drew the map we use from memory so some of the plots have no owners’ name on them or graves marked. Each spring the cemetery was burned off to get rid of the old grass and weeds, no doubt burning the wooden grave markers also. Finally the plot holders requested that the cemetery not be burned to avoid damaging stones.
The first expansion saw 33 plots in four rows laid out to the north of the first part. The second expansion saw five rows of plots laid out to the east side containing 61 plots. The third expansion was to the north of the first two, two rows of plots twenty in all.  The fourth expansion was the addition of  another row at the back, ten more plots. The fifth expansion was to the east again, two rows of plots, running north to south containing 30 more.
The small cemetery at the original site of Duff Church, Largie, was on clay land, and was never used very much and the Kerr Cemetery near the river on the Coyne Road was also not a very desirable site. During these years many people from Largie and Campbellton buried their loved ones at Cowal.  In 1892 there was an agitation in Dutton to enlarge Black’s Cemetery, which was nearly full, or start a new cemetery. By 1894 an agreement had not been possible, with the trustees of Black’s Cemetery and a decision was made to start a new cemetery close to Dutton. In the Advance 16th April 1896 the survey of the new Fairview Cemetery was announced and people were invited to come on Arbor Day and help plant trees. This new cemetery was very popular from the start and many of the Largie and Campbellton families, whose old settlers were at Cowal, buried their later generations at Fairview.
In 1898, because the plots in the Cowal cemetery were nearly all sold and the cemetery could not expand on that site because of ravines on three sides, John L. McBride (son of the John McBride buried in Black’s cemetery in 1843) who owned the farm to the south, on the other side of the road, with the same excellent land, laid out 112 plots, one rod square. The first burial was that of John McTavish’s second wife (Christina McLarty). This cemetery was also known as Cowal Cemetery but was run by a separate board.
In 1937 a discussion was held about uniting the boards but it was the next year, 2nd June 1938 before the cemeteries were joined. It was at that time the name Cowal-McBride Cemetery Association was adopted. With their resources joined they added another 48 plots to the south side. That same year, 1938, they built a better building to be used as a waiting room as well as a caretaker’s shelter. Lined with varnished tongue and groove lumber, with built in seats around the edges and heated with a small stove, it was a great convenience for people waiting for funerals to arrive, on cold winter days. There is a list of all those who donated money to build this little building and the labor was donated – a real community project.
Time marched on and there was soon to be a shortage of graves again, so in 1970 the land from the east cemetery fence to the townline, was purchased from Preston McBride. Some of this area was low, necessitating drawing in fill from the Muskoka gravel pits, to bring it up level with the rest of the cemetery. This was surveyed by Graham, Berman & Associates Ltd of St. Thomas, Consulting Engineers. This plan is dated 16thNovember 1970 and provided another 980 graves.
The Cowal-McBride Cemetery Association is run by a board of trustees, four from Dunwich and three from Southwold. In 2003 this board is made up of A. Bruce McCallum, Chairman; Bob Patterson, David McCallum and Donald L. Carroll, Secretary-Treasurer, from Dunwich; Donald Miller, Claire Oldham and John Smith, from Southwold.

The Dutton Advance – 31 May 1901 – The News of the Town:

“Mr. Duncan McArthur died at the residence of his nephew, Mr. James McArthur, Dutton, on Friday at the advanced age of 87 years. The deceased was born in Scotland and came to Canada many years ago and settled on the site of where the village of Lucknow now stands.  He was unmarried and for the past few years made his home with his nephew. The funeral took place Monday to the Cowal cemetery, the service being conducted by Revs. R. Scott and J. Steven.”

There is no stone for him at Cowal, however the late Bill Weston, caretaker of Fairview Cemetery, Dutton, for many years, believed that he was buried in an unmarked grave in the plot with his nephew James McArthur at Stone #106.

8.     – McCALLUM, Duncan Cameron – Died 15 April 1972.

“George Dugald McIntyre, St. Thomas, a native of Dutton, was found shot to death early Thursday morning of last week beside a barbed wire fence about 300 yards back of the farm home where he lived on the East River Road near White’s Station. “ He had repaired a 22 for a friend and was out trying it out. Provincial Constable Lou Bolt investigated and said the he believed that while trying to climb the barbed wire fence he was accidentally shot. His obit states that he was buried in Cowal Cemetery. There is no record of him except the Burial Permit. He may be buried in his father’s plot at stone # 1256

11. – McNEIL, Elsie May – 1893-1896

“The death occurred at the manse, Cowal, on Friday, Nov. 3, of meningitis, of Elsie May, second daughter of Rev. J. McNEIL, aged 6 years, and two months. The funeral took place yesterday to the Cowal Cemetery.”

She may be buried in the plot of some other family in an unmarked grave or perhaps the Rev. had her moved to another cemetery when he moved away?

Burial permit to Cowal Cemetery. No mention of her in The Dutton Advance.

13. – SCHULTZ, Miss Hattie – 28 May 1871 – 28 July 1893

The Dutton Advance  – “Miss Hattie SCHULTZ died in Dutton aged 22, buried at Cowal cemetery.”

According to the census of 1881 this girl seems to be a sister of Benjamin Schultz who was married first to Hannah LODGE who died 1 March 1891, perhaps Ben was the original owner of the plot so buried his sister with his wife. Later Hannah’s parents, John and Emeline (CLAYLODGE used the plot. This is at stone #358.

Mr. WESTCOTT was a carriage maker, diligent, and respected by all who knew him. The funeral takes place to-day to the Cowal cemetery.”

It is unknown where he would be buried at Cowal, however when his wife Phyllis E. (1851-1910) died nineteen years later she was buried at Fairview at stone #101 and the name of James WESTCOTT is on the stone there.
