HORRIBLE OUTRAGE OF THE DEAD
27 Jan. 1858 – Barrie Northern Advance, Vol. VII.
(from the London Free Press) Submitted by Donna Longhurst
One of the most distressing cases of the above nature that has case under our notice for years, has recently occurred at St. Thomas, County of Elgin. From information that we have received, it appears that a Mrs. PATTEN, a resident of the town, died on the 30th of December last, and was interred in the cemetery connected with St. Thomas, on the 1 st of January. The burial took place in the usual manner, and the friends of the deceased entrusted to the sexton the duty of filling the grave, which, it is believed, was faithfully performed. On Friday last, the 15th instant, it was discovered that the grave of the deceased had been robbed and her remains removed. Instant inquiries were set on foot, and after considerable difficulties, with the help of a search warrant, her mangled remains were discovered by her afflicted relatives in a room used as an Orange Lodge in St. Thomas. A coroner’s jury was speedily impannelled and an inquest was held, when the coroner bound Sparling, a shoemaker, and a Dr. Caughel, over to appear before a magistrate on Tuesday last, to answer the charge. An investigation was accordingly held, at which Judge Hughes assisted. For want of conclusive evidence the case was adjourned till Monday next. The inquiry, however, left no doubt but that the grave had been robbed by Sparling or others, for surgical purposes, but it did not show so far, that Dr. Caughel was cognizant, when he received the remains, how they were obtained. The body, it seems, was first placed in another room in the same building in which the Orange Lodge was situated, and was removed to the Lodge room, evidently for the purpose of better concealment, Sparling being the master of the Lodge, and having the custody of the key of the room, must have been privy to the disgusting outrage. It is said that he will be expelled from the Orange society for his insult to the order for appropriating their Lodge room to the infamous purpose for which it was used. Immense excitement at St. Thomas has resulted in consequence of this discovery, and a strict watch is to be kept on the cemetery in the future. The body of Mrs. Patten was re-interred on Tuesday last, a large concourse of people forming the funeral procession. We learn that the remains of the lady had been used for purposes of anatomical demonstration to a considerable extent by Dr. Caughel and his pupils, although the Doctor professes entire ignorance of the crime by which the lady was provided for dissection.

REGION II DIRECTOR’S REPORT
There was a great deal of business done by the OGS Board of Directors during the month of November. On 5th November 1993 there was a Special Board Meeting. A teleconference meeting was held 16 Nov. 1993 when the resignation of Joseph Hamburger, Office Administrator, was accepted.
Another meeting was held in Toronto on the weekend of 26-27 November, 1993. The Board had a large agenda. Included was a discussion on policy and procedures relating to purchasing and pertaining to the President’s duties that had been drafted. Other policies and procedures are in the process of being drafted and passed by the directors. Raised at the meeting was a concern about copyright violations of the cemetery publications.
Nominations were presented for two Provincial directors who are to be elected in 1994. Various reports from the committees were accepted. The responses from the questionnaire about “Wish List” were collected for analysis. A delegation from Niagara Peninsula Branch OGS made a presentation to the Board. Various concerns of the branches were presented. One of the most important topics was the review of the budget for 1994. A summary of the minutes of the Board of Directors meeting will be in NewsLeaf Feb. 1994 and a copy of the draft minutes has been sent to each Branch chairperson.
The next scheduled meeting is 11-12 Feb. 1994 with a Seminar ’94 meeting to be held on 13 Feb. 1994 in Toronto.
If you have any concerns please feel free to contact me, Jean Bircham, #10334.
