Message from the Chairman
You may notice some changes in our newsletter and in our publications. These changes are due to the post office’s new regulations governing book rates and newsletter envelopes. These regulations will dramatically increase our postage budget.
Any suggestions to help cut handling and mailing costs are welcome.
On another note, it’s hard to believe that summer is just around the corner. I hope that you all have a wonderful time searching and finding lost ancestors. May that missing link turn up. See you in September.

Death from Heart Disease – The Rev. W. Smith, Baptist minister, at Newbury, dropped dead in Mr. Bryden’s drug store on Wednesday morning from heart disease.
O.G.S. – Heraldry Flourishes in Canada
In Ottawa on 4 June 1988, His Royal Highness The Prince Edward presented Royal
Letters Patent from Her Majesty The Queen to Her Excellency Governor General
Jeanne Sauve, creating The Canadian Heraldic Authority. Canada is the first
Commonwealth country outside the United Kingdom to acquire the privilege of granting coats of arms. The establishment of this important new institution will be of great interest to all family historians with Canadian ancestry. A full account of the presentation ceremony appears in the September 1988 issue of Heraldry in Canada, the journal of The Heraldry Society of Canada.
Further details about the operation of the new Canadian Heraldic Authority have been assembled in a handsome illustrated booklet, available free of charge from: Chief Herald of Canada, Canadian Heraldic Authority, Rideau Hall, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, KlA OAl. Telephone (613) 991—2227.

Past Meetings
January:
Our guest speaker was Mrs. Marie Turvey, Associate Director of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, St. Thomas. After her very informative talk detailing the records kept in the Granite Mountain in Utah, we were shown a film, “The Strength of the Hills’ depicting storage facilities as well as the early stages of building. Members were urged to send family histories to SALT LAKE City.
February:
This meeting took the form of a “Silent Auction” whereby members co uld bid on genealogical publications donated by members. Several interesting old books on Wills, etc. were also offered and some funds were raised for our Branch.
March:
Mrs. Cathy Thompson, of Woodstock, spoke to us in some detail on the Upper Canada Land Petitions, originals of which have been available on micro-film in our St. Thomas Public Library for some time past. However, many of us were unaware of this, and we learned a great deal about Crown land transactions that evening.
April:
Mr. George Thorman, former teacher and principal in the St. Thomas Secondary School system, and now a member of the Elgin Military Museum, outlined our military history from the time of the War of l8l2 and even earlier. He stated that the Museum would be happy to receive any discharge papers or correspondence from anyone whose relative had ever served in the Elgin County Militia in those early days.
St. Thomas Journal, July 25, 1879 – “Town and Country Miscellany”
A young orphan girl named Maggie Carr, one of Miss Rye’s immigrants, who was formerly employed near this town, died at Chatham under distressing circumstances a few days ago. She had been engaged in service there during the past year, and went to a boarding house in consequence of an attack of fever. Medical assistance was only sent for at the last stage of the disease, and it then appeared that she had been sadly neglected since she became ill. She expired soon afterwards, and was buried at the expense of the town.
The convicts John Campbell and Albert Coleman were taken from the County Gaol on Tuesday and sent per steamer Alma Munro to Kingston Penitentiary, under the charge of Constable Langan.
We are pleased to hear that James Haight of Union, student of the St. Thomas High
School, and one of the Lacrosse Club who played the Guelph boys so successfully on 8th of June, is steadily recovering from the severe attack of typhoid fever which has prostrated him for the past six weeks.
