HISTORY AND COMMENT

Nicholas Carter Brown was the son of Walter Brown and Jemima Carter of Lot 10 and 11, Concession 4, Malahide Township. He was born at Malahide in 1825 and died at his home there on February 19, 1920 at the age of 94 years.  He was the oldest of 5 brothers and one sister by Walter’s second family with Jemima Carter. Walter had a son and two daughters by his first wife, Catherine Learn. Nicholas C. Brown was one of the founders of the Dunboyne Cemetery and attended many funerals in the area. In some cases, when there is no probate, death registration, gravestone or obituary his diary entries are the only record we have of a death of a local resident. He kept his diary from 1859 to 1910. Many of the entries relate to weather conditions and barter transactions. I have extracted here the entries that would be of most interest to genealogists.
