EARLY DOCTORS HELPED CITY GROW

copied from St. Thomas Times Journal, June 27,1981

– submitted by Shirley Ewanick

JOHN HENRY WILSON: Another St. Thomas native who became a noted local physician was John Henry Wilson, who graduated from St. Thomas Grammar School and went to Toronto Normal School and the New York Medical College where he graduated in 1857. The following year he received his MD from Victoria College in Coburg. He set up a practice in St. Thomas in 1860 and soon became know for his quick and correct diagnosis of disease in its complicated forms.

He was fond of horses and the owner of several, but his favourite was Billy and rural residents of the area were used to seeing his flying figure on the white horse, which is credited with helping to save many lives by transporting the doctor speedily to the scene.

In 1871 Dr. Wilson was elected to represent East Elgin in the Legislative Assembly where he served as a Liberal member until 1879, and again from 1882 to 1891. He was made a senator in the Laurier government in 1904.

LEONARD LUTON: started his career as a school teacher in Yarmouth Township, where he was born in 1835, and after teaching for sic [six?] years he went on to get more education and graduated from Chicago Medical College in 1867.

The following year he began a practice in St. Thomas which he continued until the time of his death in 1910. Dr. Luton was the first and perhaps the only physician in the early years to practise homeopathic medicine and he acquired a large following.     He held office on the Ontario Medical Council and was a member of the Board of Examiners for the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons from 1885 – 1887.

In 1875, Dr. Luton was appointed physician and surgeon for the Elgin House of Industry, a position he held for the rest of his life. He was Coroner for the county and a member of the staff of the Amasa Wood Hospital where he served several terms on the Board of Governors. He also found time to take an active part in civic politics, serving as alderman for a number of years.

DUNCAN McLARTY and COLIN McLARTY; Turned MD. Another teacher turned doctor was Duncan McLarty who was born in Southwold Township in 1849 and attended St. Thomas Grammar School. After teaching in the area for several years, he too attended the Rolph Medical School in Toronto and then went abroad for more education. He set up a medical practice in the city in 1869 and later went into partnership with his younger brother Colin, who had graduated from Trinity College in Toronto in 1875 as the gold medallist in his class.

Dr. Duncan was active in civic as well as medical affairs and was appointed as county representative on the school board and first elected as alderman in 1875. He served as mayor in 1977-78. He was an enthusiastic Freemason and in 1879 erected the building just west of Pearly Street which was used as the Masonic Temple for many years.

He was active in business and the Board of Trade and was a director of the Atlas Loan Company and of the Elgin Loan, where he also served as president for nine years.

His fine house is now a funeral home on Elgin Street.

After his early death in 1903, at age 53, his brother “Dr. Colin” entered into a partnership with his nephew Dr. A.C. Campbell under the firm name of Campbell and McLarty.

Josiah and Margaret CORLIS: No record of St. Thomas’s early doctors would be complete without mention of the first woman to practise medicine in this part of the country. Margaret Corlis was married to Dr. Josiah Corlis who opened a medical office in St. David’s ward in 1873.

In 1881, at age 42, she decided to study medicine herself, and enroled in the Women’s Medical School at Queens. She had three sons at home at the time, the youngest aged four years.

In a history of early medical doctors in the county it is stated that Dr. Corlis was “remembered as the only woman practitioner in this part of Ontario, and she drove speedily around town or out on the less frequented county roads her skill in handling her spirited steeds was ever viewed with admiration by all lovers of horseflesh, and her great kindness, and consideration for her youthful patients is a cherished memory.”     In 1891 when both were 51 years old, the Corlises emigrated to Australia where Margaret became the first woman ever to be registered as a medical practitioner. The couple paid a visit to St. Thomas only once after leaving in 1905.

Since the turn of the century many doctors have come to the city and there are currently about 36 general practitioners and specialists in St. Thomas and another 18 doctors at the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital. As well, there are 144 full-time and 85 part-time nurses employed at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital and 119 nurses at the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital and 12 public health nurses as well as a number of independent nurses working for various agencies.
