VOL. 4                ISSUE 1                March 1985

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

May I first of all welcome each of you to the fourth year of our branch. As you already know, we have made a great deal of progress in the past three years. This of course is only possible by the dedicated support that you the members and volunteers have been giving. May I ask you to give another year like the last one and we should have a record of achievement that few branches can surpass.

May I also express my thanks and those of the membership to Tony Hofstee, our past chairman, for the guidance he has given our branch since it started.

We are looking forward to an interesting year and hope that we will see many of our members at our meetings each month.

Stan Daugharty

The ROWE family of Bayham and Malahide

Daniel Row (later changed to Rowe) was born in 1822 in Somersetshire, England. On July 23, 1846 he married Anna Maria (1822 – 1858), probably nee Court. Their eldest son John Henry was born on November 15, 1849. Six weeks later the family boarded a boat for Canada. Daniel was presented with a black thorn cane as a parting gift. The sailing vessel took seven weeks to arrive. Daniel and his family settled near Port Burwell on lot 8 of the 2nd concession. In August 1851 Daniel’s second child was born, Emily Court (Emily’s uncle was Edward Court). In November 1851 a sudden snow storm came up and caught Daniel Row’s neighbour Francis McQuiggan by surprise as he was returning from Vienna. Francis had gone to Vienna to buy shoes for his youngest son but he died in the storm. It was Daniel Row who found him the following morning.

In 1852 or 1853 Daniel and Anna Maria’s last child was born. This child was named Mary Ann. She married a William J. Corley (perhaps Corless) but little else is known about her. In 1858 Anna Maria died. Where she is buried is not known. Daniel remarried on July 15, 1859 in Port Burwell to Eliza Ann Appleton. Eliza Ann was born on June 29, 1838 in Yorkshire, England, daughter of Thomas Appleton and Jane Horner. Seven children were born to this couple. Two of them (George and Ada May) died at an early age and are buried in Luton Cemetery next to Daniel Row. The other children were Frances (1861 – 1950) who married a Mr. Van Dusen and lived in Michigan; Agnes Mary (1864 – 1948) who was married to a Mr. Mills and also lived in Michigan; Edward A. (1866 – 1934) who married Bessie Blashill of Aylmer; Amy Helen (1872 1917) was married and lived in Calgary; Cora Selina who was born 7 days after her father died in 1876 was married to Hugh Burger and lived in British Columbia. Her mother was married a second time to Hugh Burger’s father Fred.

John Henry Rowe and Edward Rowe both served in the Aylmer Militia. John Henry had earlier been one of the first members of the Vienna Infantry. He took his oath of allegiance in December 1864. In 1866 he served in Sarnia during the Fenian Raids. Apparently John liked Sarnia because he moved there in early 1900 with his wife Alice Barbara Crane. For his service in the Fenian Raids, John was awarded a medal and a tract of land in Northern Ontario.

The descendants of this family are many and widespread. The following are some of the local descendants.

Ethel Rowe, daughter of John and Alice, married John Hardy of Sarnia.  John and Ethel had two daughters, Alice (Mrs. Maclntyre of Sarnia) and Norm (Mrs. Sanderson of Woodstock), Ethel Rowe died in 1961 in Sarnia.  Her husband and her father died on the same day in the same house.

Emily Court Rowe married in 1873 to John Richardson. They had three children, Alta, Lillie and Earl. Alta was married twice, first to a Dr. Abell and secondly to a John Wilson. Alta had a son, Dr. Murray Abell by her first marriage and a daughter, Mrs. Doreen Winterton, by her second marriage. Emily died in 1933. Earl was also married and is buried in Aylmer Cemetery. Edward and Bessie (Blashill) Rowe had four known children, George, Helen (born 1916, Mrs. Morley Clunas), Cora (born 1925, Mrs. Elmore Perry) and Mary Agnes (born 1923, Mrs. Walter Dakins). Edward and Bessie’s grandchildren include Wayne E. Dakins (1942), Carol Ann Dakins (1946, married first to Hans Neef), Brenda Joan Dakins (1951) and Judy Elaine Dakins (1953).

Thanks go to Mrs. Alice Maclntyre of Sarnia for a lot of this information. Other information was obtained from Mrs. Lou Appleton of London and from the records of Tony Hofstee. If you have additional information please send to the Elgin County Branch attention Tony Hofstee.
