Brief History of Holy Angels cemetery

The first cemetery established by Holy Angels parish was located on the property of the present church, Talbot Street, St. Thomas. Property for a new cemetery was purchased in May 1874 from Samuel Day. The parcel consisted of ten acres and was purchased for $2,300. It is located at 158 Sunset Drive, St. Thomas (Highway 4). The new cemetery was blessed by Bishop Walsh on June 14, 1874.

Several articles appeared in the St. Thomas Weekly Dispatch, regarding the new cemetery.

May 7, 1874:

The Roman Catholics of St. Thomas have purchased ten acres, part of the Glenbanner farm, from Mr. S. Day, Esq., about one mile south of St. Thomas for the use of a cemetery. It is the intention to have the land surveyed into lots, also to plant it with ornamental trees. The price was three hundred dollars per acre.

June 11, 1874:

THE NEW R. C. CEMETERY

On Monday a large force of men assembled on the ground purchased by the Roman Catholics from Mr. S. Day, for cemetery, and set to work to fence it in, drawing lumber, others digging holes, fixing posts. The work was quickly completed, about seventy hands being hard at work all day.

June 11, 1874:

CONSECRATION

The Bishop of the Diocese will hold a Confirmation on Sunday next, 14th inst., in the Church of Holy Angels, and afterwards, proceed to consecrate the new R. C. Cemetery, on the Bannerman farm south of the toll gate on the gravel road. A collection will be taken to defray the expense of fencing, gates, etc. etc.

November 26 (possibly 1875):

EXHUMATION

The Roman Catholics are at present employed in removing their dead from the old to the beautiful new church yard bought by Father Flannery from Mr. Samuel Day, last year.

December 17 (possibly 1875):

In removing the bodies from the R.C. cemetery to the new burying grounds, the body of Mr. Casey, father of the M. P. for West Elgin, was found to be in a complete state of preservation, after an interment of twenty years. The grave clothes were entirely worn out, but the face and form of the deceased were intact.

From the above articles, it is clear that the bodies interred in the old cemetery were indeed moved to the new burying ground. It is known that there are no surviving monuments for many of the deceased who were moved to the new cemetery.
