1812 War Veterans – Elgin County, Ontario
The following list of veterans of the War of 1812 was compiled by Pat Temple, using the indexes created by the late George Thorman from Middlesex Militia Pay Sheets. Additional names were found in a newspaper article in the Canadian Home Journal, October 12, 1875. This article was printed in the March 2010 issue of this newsletter. Some details of these veterans’ service was added from “An Index of the Land Claim Certificates of Upper Canada Militiamen who served in the War of 1812-1814″, compiled by Wilfred R. Lauber and published by the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1995.
The majority of the names found below served in the Middlesex Militia, of which Elgin County was included. Many of the men did not reside in Elgin County, but in neighboring townships. With Jim McCallum’s assistance with research, an attempt was made to identify each man, using census records, cemetery records, and family trees posted on Ancestry.com and Rootsweb. This information will eventually be posted on our website, where further details can be added as it becomes available to us.
This material was published in the Elgin OGS newsletter, “The Talbot Times”, over several issues during 2012. In response to those articles, several additional names were sent to us by descendants, mainly for veterans who had served elsewhere before relocating to Elgin County. Therefore, this is the most up-to-date file to use, and will continue to be updated as more information is received.

BERDAN, Jacob,b. 1793, died 1879, buried Talbotville Cemetery, received Land Claims Certificate, Unit – 1st Flank Company 2nd Regiment Norfolk Militia, Vol 18 File 10, pages 897-898. Served in the 2nd Norfolk Battalion in Capt. Rapelje’s Company. Was enrolled in Woodhouse township in 1812 and discharged in March 1815. Was in the skirmishes at Fort Erie ferry and Malcolm’s mills, and on picket duty two years at Long Point. Lived in Southwold.

BOSTWICK, Gideon, Pte, served under Captain Daniel Springer 1812, 1814, received Land Claims Certificate, 1st Regiment Oxford Militia, Vol 18 File 11, pages 1099-1104. Possible identification: Gideon Grant Bostwick, born August 27, 1794 New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut; died January 2, 1849 Westminister Township, Middlesex Co.
BOSTWICK, John. Born February 24, 1780 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, son of Gideon Bostwick. Moved to Canada in 1799, settling in the Long Point area. Married Mary “Polly” Ryerson. Became Captain of a company of the Norfolk Militia. Wounded twice in battle. Granted 600 acres of land at the mouth of Kettle Creek. Moved to Port Stanley about 1817. Died September 9, 1849. Buried in Christ Church Cemetery, Port Stanley.
BOUGHNER, John, born January 8, 1780 in Sussex, New Jersey, died March 17, 1855; buried in Talbotville Cemetery, Southwold Township. Received land Claims Certificate, Unit – 2nd Flank company 1st Regiment Norfolk Militia, Vol 18 File 12, pages 1127-1128.
BOUGHNER, Matthias, b. 1 Jan 1799, d. 1 Sept 1878, buried Orwell Cemetery, received Land Claims Certificate, Unit – Flank company 2nd Regiment Norfolk Militia, Vol 18 File 12, pages 1136-1137. Served in Col. Ryerson’s Norfolk Battalion, in Capt. McCall’s company. Was enrolled at Simcoe in 1814, and fought at Lundy’s Lane. Discharged at Simcoe in 1815. Lived in Yarmouth.
BOUGHNER, Matthias Jr. received Land Claims Certificate, Unit – 2nd Flank Company 1st Regiment Norfolk Militia, Vol 18 File 12 pages 1138-1142. Born November 13, 1777; died June 15, 1855; buried in Old Windham Pioneer Cemetery, Norfolk County; found on 1851 Windham census.

Probably son of Adam Burwell (1748-1828). Lewis was born in Bertie Township. Possible identification: a Lewis Burwell found on 1851 census in Brantford, age 58, born in Ontario, with wife Adelia. Born February 17, 1794 in Bertie Township; died April 20, 1865 in Burford Township, Brant Co.; buried in Burford Pioneer Cemetery. Married 1. Elizabeth Ann Whitehead; married 2. Mary Adelia Northrop.

BURWELL, Robert, Pte., served under Capt. Leslie Patterson 1812, 1813-1814, Captain Gillman Willson 1814, Captain Leslie Patterson 1814, received land Claims Certificate Unit – Flank Company 1st Regiment Middlesex Militia, Vol 18 File 15 pages 1657-1658. Son of James Burwell & Hannah Frazee. Wounded at Lundy’s lane. Applied for land in 1820 and received 100 acres. Settled in Southwold on Lot 19, North Talbot Road, which he patented on June 18, 1825. This lot later became part of the village of Fingal. In 1831, purchased one quarter acre in Lot 15, Concession 10, Dunwich. Robert is found in 1851 census in Mosa Township, age 57 (born 1795). Moved to Camden Township, Kent County, where he is found on 1861, 1871 and 1881 census. Died November 6, 1884 age 90. Buried in Phillips Cemetery, Camden.

CAMPBELL, Isaac, b 1796, died 1878, Scottsville Cemetery, Middlesex County. Served in Capt. Robbin’s company under Col. Cartwright. Enrolled at Kingston in 1813 and discharged at the close of the war. Lived near Tempo in Westminister Township.

CONRAD, John – lived in Woodhouse Township, Norfolk County, son of John Conrad; served as an Ensign in Medcalf’s Company in 1812; and was a private in McCracken’s Detachment of the Norfolk Militia. Received grant of 200 acres in Yarmouth Township, at the southeast corner of Yarmouth Centre. Died on December 20, 1834 age 43, from an accident on the Talbot Road when his wagon tipped and he was pitched off. A horse pulling a following wagon stepped on his head and he died from the injury.

There is a Francis Cutler buried in Orwell cemetery, but the inscription is not visible. Catherine, wife of Francis Cutler (died 1852 age 45) is buried in 19th Mile Creek Baptist cemetery, Yarmouth. Name found in a list of veterans seeking compensation in 1875. Noted that he has died since the application was sent in.

Rapelje’s company, and discharged at Port Dover in 1815. Was present at the taking of Detroit in 1812; at the battle of Black Rock in the same year; at the battle of Longwoods in 1814, and took a company of U.S. soldiers prisoners at Chatham; took 18 prisoners at the battle of Nanticoke; on Guard at Port Dover with 25 men and fired upon the enemy; and finally at Lundy’s Lane. Was wounded in the thigh with a marine shot at Black Rock, and also in the wrist with a marine pike. Was promoted from the ranks on the eve of Lundy’s Lane, and appointed a number of years ago Lieut.-Col. of the 4th Batt. Elgin Militia. Lived in Southwold.

Prisoner at Chilcothe, Kentucky but returned to Canada to take part in battle of Lundy’s Lane.

YOUNGLOVE, Ezekiel, Pte., served under Capt. Leslie Patterson 1812. Born about 1750. He is mentioned in Col. Talbot’s land records in Southwold. He is also listed as a settler at Watson’s Corners, Southwold Township. He died about 1831 in Burford Township.
