Louis Moedinger Sr., arrived in Sparta about 1859 and started a furniture business and undertaking service in “The Abbey”. His son, Louis Jr., learned the business and purchased the west end of the Hilborn store for an undertaking and hardware establishment. After the death of Louis Moedinger Jr., in 1940, he was succeeded by his daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Robert Harvey, who conducted the hardware business.

The Moedinger father and son team made the caskets used in the undertaking business, also some furniture. Miss Amelia Moedinger helped in the business and worked on the lining and finishing of the coffins. During these years Sparta was a thriving village. In keeping up with the demands, a handsomely appointed new hearse was acquired. It came from Buffalo and had been made about 1840. The hearse was sold to a collector in London.

In earlier days a democrat or sleigh was used to convey the casket to the cemetery. For many years Mr. Joseph Leverton was assistant to Mr. L. W. Moedeinger. These gentlemen wore black broadcloth mourning suits, gloves and high silk hats.

Various horses in the community were hired to draw the hearse. The old hearse was laid away with the other relics of a bygone era and Mr. Moedinger purchased a second horse-drawn hearse at a cost of $1,200. This vehicle was simpler in design that the first one. A photo of the hearse can be seen in the Peter Robson Art Gallery in Sparta, Ontario.

These records were made available to Elgin OGS by Mr. Moedinger’s daughter, Helen Harvey of Sparta.

The records begin in 1899, but from 1899 to 1902, there is only a list of burials with a date (presumed to be the date of burial). No other information is given. This list will be given separately at the beginning of the index below. Please do not request further information for these names, as none exists in the records.
