Sparta South Cemetery

The land for Sparta South cemetery was purchased on 2 February 1854 from Isaac Moore at the price of $170.00 for 1 ½ acres. The position of this land is lot 21, east part, concession 3, Yarmouth township. The first trustees in charge of this burial ground were Jesse Kipp, John P. Vercoe, Hiram B. Smith, John McDowell and John A. Eakins. The first meeting to plan for this transaction was held 25 January 1854. Hiram B. Smith purchased the farm after 1854.

At a later date, prior to 1933, 3 ½ acres was added from the Smith family but no details are available. In the 1930’s the trustee group was very active. They organized Field Days and Old Boys Reunions to be held on Labour Day weekend. A band was brought in as were ball teams. Many men of the community were asked to participate, also the ladies of the Women’s Institute, and other organizations were asked to help with food preparation.

In 1962 some discussion took place regarding adding more land to the grounds but no transaction took place.

This property being used as cemetery measures 326′ X 306′ and is surrounded on 3 sides by a wire fence, an iron fence across the front with 2 iron gates leading to the driveways. It is also surrounded by evergreen trees on 3 sides. The Smith family reserved plots across the center front at the time of their land transaction.

It is understood that a number of markers were moved from other private burial grounds to this site after it opened in 1854. See addendum.
Lloyd Bailey was Secretary Treasurer for many years prior to his death.
