The Sparta Settlement

Jonathan Doan (1765-1847), a member of Society of Friends, emigrated from Pennsylvania to the Niagara District about 1789 where he lived for 25 years. In 1813 he settled in Yarmouth township where he acquired some 200 acres of uncleared land. Colonel Baby appointed Jonathan Doan as agent for his lands in South Yarmouth. Doan, subsequently obtained control of some 3000 additional acres. Jonathan Doan was the first white man to settle south of Talbot Street, St. Thomas. In 1815 his family came to the log house which Jonathan had built.

In 1817 Doan returned to Pennsylvania where he induced a group of Quakers to come with him when he returned to the Sparta district. Doan operated a gristmill, sawmill and a tannery which formed the nucleus of the settlement. In 1820 Jonathan Doan provided land on lot 19, concession 4 in Yarmouth township, for a cemetery (Sparta Friends Burial Ground), at a price of 5 shillings. Later a frame meeting house was built on the same property and the log house was used for a school.
The present Meeting House, north of Sparta, was built in 1865 at a cost of $1,507. It was entirely built by Friends and volunteer help from neighbours. Reuben & Sarah (Wright) Haight moved to Yarmouth township in 1821. Sarah was the first recognized minister among Friends from 1839 – 1853 . The prosperous farming community which Doan founded was known as the Sparta Settlement.

This burial ground at lot 19, concession 4 is found just west of the village of Sparta on the north side of Elgin County Road #27 (Union to Sparta Road). It is 275 ft X 142 ft, surrounded by a concrete fence with wrought iron gate.
Numerous old trees throughout the cemetery provide a very peaceful setting. Many graves have no markers or records. Several graves have only a rough field stone as a marker with no inscription or occasionally initials. Almost all spaces have been used whether marked or not.

In 1906 a meeting was called of persons interested in the maintenance of the burial ground. In 1907 a public meeting was held of the Friends Burial Ground Improvement Association which had been formed the years previously – this time the Association was appointed sole Trustee. These Trustees were William B. Cole, Frank Schooley, Robert Graham, Granville H. Haight and Maria Haight. The following rules were adopted:

In 1918 the permanent concrete fence was built. In 1950 a successful appeal was made for funds to institute permanent care. A new section, 100 ft X 142 ft on the east was purchased in 1963 but is not yet in use.
In addition to the Trustees mentioned previously, others who have served in this capacity include Oscar Chase, Reuben Haight, Seth Zavitz, Eric O. Oille, Norman Oille, Earle Cole, Wilson Mills, Russell Zavitz, Miss Nellie Haight (later Mrs. Vincent Zavitz), Mrs. Russell Zavitz, Russell Mills, Robert Willson, Frank Zavitz, Mrs. Rose Ingram, Gilbert Zavitz, Max Fish, and John Wilson
