This cemetery is now under the care of the Yarmouth Township Council. It is situated along County Road 30 (Highbury Ave) just north of County Road 52. In 1979 the Ontario Government erected a plaque at this cemetery. The following is taken from the plaque:

“This block of land was deeded to Hugh Douglas as trustee for a burying ground on June 2, 1845. Many pioneer families of the communities lie here with the first burial during the early 1830’s. The Douglas family conveyed the cemetery to the trustees of the chapel of the Can. Wesleyan Methodist New Connection on Nov. 12, 1846. A frame church stood on the north-west section of the lot until about 1905.”

This cemetery was previously transcribed by an Elgin County resident and since that transcription (done about 1972) two stones have disappeared. I noted that there were some broken pieces of stone lying at the back of the lot under trees and dirt. A further investigation will have to be carried out in the fall when the underbrush has died off and the mosquitoes have disappeared.
