The First Yarmouth Baptist Church Cemetery
or
“The Plains”

by Norma Smith

The First Yarmouth Regular Baptist Church Cemetery is situated on Lots 7 & 8, Concession 4, Yarmouth Township in the County of Elgin. It is on the corner of County Roads 27 & 22. The 911 address is 43422 Sparta Line (at Fairview Road). The land was purchased from John McKenzie in 1848 at a price of 7 pounds 10 shillings. At that time the land was in the Township of Yarmouth, County of Middlesex, District of London, Province of Canada. The size of the parcel of land was 209.22 feet square.

The first trustees were Christian Minior, Nelson VanBuskirk, William Yorke, Anderson Montross and John Lanning.
An additional parcel of land, 192 feet X 66 feet was added at the east in 1963.

In 1983, 115 stones were removed from their original position and placed in a cairn thus preserving some broken stones and others in poor repair. This also made it much easier to keep the grounds in much better condition with the larger equipment used.

In the ADDENDUM you will find names and dates which have been found in “THE PLAINS” records. I received this information from Jean I. Griffin who published a “History of The First Yarmouth Regular Baptist Church “ or “The Plains”, as it is well known to local folk.

This well kept cemetery is in the capable hands of the following Trustees – Verne Higgs, Art Lang, Gordon Axford, and Larry Axford
