The land for the cemetery was donated by Malcolm McIntyre. The first burials were Alexander McNichol, age 19 years, and James Parker, age 23 years, who died July 6, 1862. These men were washing sheep in the Thames River and were drowned.

On the 1861 Census for Southwold township, Alexander McNichol is living with his parents Peter and Catherine McNichol and five sisters, and twin brothers. The family were all born in Scotland and were members of the Free Church. Peter was a farmer and lived on lot 9, concession 3.

On the 1861 Census for Southwold township, James Parker is married and living with his wife Nancy and two children aged 3 and 1, on lot 11, concession 2. James is listed as a farmer. All except Nancy, who was born in Scotland, were born in Ontario and were members of the Free Church. Family researcher Ross Parker notes that Nancy was born 29 March 1831 at Craignish, Argyll, Scotland, daughter of Peter and Catherine McNichol.

The 1877 Historical Atlas of Elgin County shows a school on the same property as the cemetery.
