The Hunters were responsible for the establishment of the Hunter Cemetery (often called the Lake Road Cemetery), the community burying ground on the south side of the Lake Road at the northwest corner of Lot 3, about a mile east of the Southwold-Dunwich “town line”. The family story about its beginning is that one day as Thomas Hunter and his first wife, Amelia Read, were passing by the site, Amelia, who was then suffering from a fatal illness, told Thomas that she wished to be buried there. Shortly thereafter Thomas and his brother Fleming bought the land and set it aside as a cemetery. Amelia died after a lingering illness on November 14, 1859, and was buried on the site she had chosen.

The registered deed for the cemetery property shows that it was bought by Thomas Hunter and Fleming Hunter from George Miller for forty dollars. The deed was drawn up 14 March 1869, four months after Amelia’s death; obviously the parties must have come to an agreement well before the formal document was written. A plan of the cemetery, probably the original one, which is now in the possession of Doris (Hunter) Tolman, a great-granddaughter of Fleming Hunter, bears the title “Plan of the Burying Ground Belonging to the Wesleyan Methodist Congregation of the Lake Road Church, Township of Southwold”, so apparently Thomas and Fleming donated the cemetery to the church. Below the title appears the date 1859. The cemetery property was nine rods square it still is) and was divided into 65 plots, 56 of which were one rod square, the others being half that size. The names of 21 plot owners are marked on the plan. One of these is Robert Jones, who did not arrive from Nova Scotia until 1865, so either the plan was made after that year or if drawn earlier had been updated.

More than one inscription in the cemetery gives a death date earlier than that of Amelia Hunter, who is supposed to have been the first buried there. The dates in some of these may simply be wrong, but in one case this is certainly not so. The inscription for James McKay gives the date of his death as 1852, some seventeen years before Amelia died. From other sources it is known that he in fact did die in 1852. The explanation, which probably applies to the other anomalous dates as well, must be that James McKay, who lived on the Lake Road on the farm immediately to the west of the Jones Homestead, was buried on the MacKay farm and the inscription for him was put on the MacKay monument when it was erected in the cemetery at some later date, probably after his wife was buried there in 1894; hers is the only other inscription on the stone.
The metal plaque now mounted on the cemetery fence reads: “Hunter Cemetery 1861”, the writer had reason to believe that it was placed there in 1927. If the date is intended to indicate the beginning of the cemetery, it is in error by two years.
In the Hunter Cemetery lie buried four of the five children of David Fleming Hunter Sr. and Hannah Shipley, along with their spouses:
Elizabeth Hunter, and her husband Thomas Jones
Thomas Hunter and wife Amelia Read and #2 wife Eliza Guernsey
Fleming Hunter and 2 wives, Hannah Brown and Matilda Embree
John Hunter and his 1st wife Eleanor Fillmore

More than 25 of their descendants are also buried there, and about 20 spouses of those descendants. (The other child of Fleming and Hannah, Letitia (Hunter) Shipley, and her husband William are buried in the Tyrconnell Cemetery a few miles to the west in Dunwich Township.

The current trustees, as of April 11, 1990 are three men – Kenneth Palmer, Secretary Treasurer, Jack Carter and Murray Jones.

The above information was provided by Mason Fulkerson, of Boxall. He had been told many stories by Carl Jones and in turn, Mason related them to me —-S.M.E. June/901889 – FERGUSON Family lived on the Union Road. A young man by the name of Lethbridge and a man named Ferguson who survived the epidemic buried a Ferguson who was Catholic. They couldn’t go in the daytime as St. Thomas had guards posted on the bridges, leading into town. Guards had guns to prevent intruders because of the Epidemic scare. They loaded him in a democrat wagon and buried him in the Catholic Cemetery, St. Thomas, without benefit of clergy, sometime after midnight. – By M. Fulkerson.
