History of Springfield Cemetery

The farm on which the cemetery is located was originally owned by Moses Yoder (1799 – 1880), a native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The farm was later owned by Benjamin Kinsey, from whom the cemetery property was purchased. The cemetery was established in 1871. The following is an article written in 1956 about the cemetery:

“Springfield Cemetery Opened 85 Years Ago

Women’s Institute Aids Trustees and Work Bee Gets Things Done Quickly

Springfield – Formerly known as the Kinsey Burying Ground, the Springfield (East) Cemetery on the south part of lot 29, concession 10 in Malahide Township was opened 85 years ago, on May 29, 1871.

The burial ground originally contained one acre and is ten by 16 rods. The property was bought from Benjamin Kinsey. Jesse Weaver, Cornelius Neff and David Kinsey were the first trustees, and W. H. Graves was the first secretary-treasurer.

In 1899, additional land was purchased to the north and west; in 1922 a strip along the east side was purchased and in 1947 an acre was added to the east, making three acres in all.

An angle steel fence and two stone posts were erected along part of the front in 1939; in 1950 two more posts were erected, along with a fence, and four more posts, and the balance of the angle steel fence were completed in 1955.

From 1913 to 1926 the Springfield Women’s Institute worked in conjunction with the Trustees Board to have the ground cleared of weeds and trees. They succeeded in having a building erected to house the tools and shelter the people in time of storm. The Women’s Institute have assisted with timely advice and financial aid. The Springfield Cemetery was incorporated in 1925; since then donations were requested from plot owners of one dollar per plot until 1947 when the price was raised to two dollars.

A perpetuity account was opened in 1933 with the Post Office Department and was later transferred to the Public Trustee to conform to the Cemeteries Act. Plot owners, in the old part of the cemetery, are urged to buy perpetuity certificates for their plots. The new regulations of the Department of Health, for 1955, state that all plots must now be sold with permanent upkeep.

The cemetery board is a non-profit organization with no member receiving any remuneration. Whenever there is need for another coat of paint on the steel picket fence, the Trustees call for a “bee” and the work is completed in short order.

Since Decoration Day was inaugurated the plot owners and the public have been taking more and more interest in decorating the graves of loved ones with beautiful flowers and the cemetery has taken on a new look.

The secretary-treasurer of the present board [1956], Frank Lamb, advises that $87.00 was previously acknowledged and he has since received maintenance charges of $2.00 each from Mrs. Ed Rule, Mrs. W. Plato, R. B. McKenney, Clint Charlton, Mrs. Eva Moore, Mrs. Pearl Jamieson, Vic Whitcroft, Bruce Moore, Oviet Babcock, and Mrs. S. P. Charlton, making a total of $107.00.”

The late Max Lamb of RR #2 Springfield was secretary-treasurer for many years. The past chairman, the late Gordon Hoshal, of Springfield passed away in 1990. Ernest Lamb has been a great supporter of the Cemetery. He had the sign “Springfield Cemetery” installed and planted many trees, with the help of others.
