Dunwich – Cowal McBride Part 1

The first expansion saw 33 plots in four rows laid out to the north of the first part. The second expansion saw five rows of plots laid out to the east side containing 61 plots. The third expansion was to the north of the first two, two rows of plots twenty in all. The fourth expansion was the addition of another row at the back, ten more plots. The fifth expansion was to the east again, two rows of plots, running north to south containing 30 more.
The small cemetery at the original site of Duff Church, Largie, was on clay land, and was never used very much and the Kerr Cemetery near the river on the Coyne Road was also not a very desirable site. During these years many people from Largie and Campbellton buried their loved ones at Cowal. In 1892 there was an agitation in Dutton to enlarge Black’s Cemetery, which was nearly full, or start a new cemetery. By 1894 an agreement had not been possible, with the trustees of Black’s Cemetery and a decision was made to start a new cemetery close to Dutton. In the Advance 16^th April 1896 the survey of the new Fairview Cemetery was announced and people were invited to come on Arbor Day and help plant trees. This new cemetery was very popular from the start and many of the Largie and Campbellton families, whose old settlers were at Cowal, buried their later generations at Fairview.

NOTE: This is the only Lacey plot in this cemetery so likely contains the remains of 17 year old Robert E. LACEY, youngest son of Joseph LACEY of Dutton. Robert was sick three weeks with inflammation of the bowels. The funeral took place on Sunday and was followed by a huge concourse of people, to the Cowal cemetery. The Dutton Advance  May 1896.

According to their obits, The Dutton Advance 13 January 1910 – Joseph LACEY and his wife The Dutton Advance 23 July 1908 – are buried in Fairview Cemetery, however they have no markers either. Joseph’s farm was S1/4 of lot 12, Con. 5 north of A , Dunwich. John LACEY and Joseph LACEY were brothers.

[118] Arch’d McLachlin was married 1^st to a Catherine McLellan who died 29 Oct 1857aged 41 years and is buried in the Mayfair cemetery in Ekfrid, by whom he had a large family. Four sons are also buried at Mayfair Cemetery – James, Abner – 1848 – 9 March 1861, Colin – 1851 – 9 March 1861 and Archibald – 1843 – 25 Feb. 1861. (Believed to have died with diphtheria.) His 2^nd wife Catherine, had children from her first husband and then there were three more from their union.

[208] Sarah Carr was a sister of Amy Carr, wife of Arch’d McPherson. When he died Sarah told her sister there was room for them in her plot so he was buried here. Many years later after Mrs. McCallum was dead, her heir informed McPhersons that his body had to be removed even though he did not ever intend to use the plot. By this time the remains were hard to move however they were moved to the south cemetery and are at stone # 1115.
[209] There is quite a mix up here and hard to straighten out. The father of William and Thomas Roach, was John Roach, who died about 1866 (the year his will was probated) He may be buried in the plot next to this one because it was deeded to Mr. Roach. There may have been no stone for him because it was to go up after his widow died. His wife was Mary Ross. After John’s death Mary married in 1867, Joseph Clark, a widower whose 1^st wife was Lavine Lodge and had two children, Enoch and Jane. When Jane was 19 she married William H. Roach, Mary’s son by her 1^st marriage. When Joseph Clark died Mary buried him in this plot with her sons, both of whom died before she did. Mary (Ross) (Roach) Clark died in February 1916, aged 97 years and was buried in Cowal Cemetery. The Dutton Advance – 17^th February 1916. No marker exists for her. Since these are the only Roach plots in the cemetery and her 2^nd husband is buried here, it seems safe to assume that she is in this plot or the one next to it with her 1^st husband. William Roach and Jane Clark had one daughter, Mrs. Neil G. McMillan, of Rodney, who later moved to Yorkton, Sask., where they kept store. Mrs. William H. Roach (Jane Clark) may also be buried here with her husband or she may have died while staying with her daughter in Saskatchewan and been buried in the West.

The death certificate from Florida had the following – Born 12 April 1887, Port Rowan, Ontario, son of Walter & Almeda (Groves) Biddle, farmer most of his life and later a general business man.

[298] Harley Stride was living in the U.S. and was drafted into the American Army, who found that he had an advanced case of T.B. so was honorably discharged. He returned to the home of his parents in a very sick condition. The military police, who must have thought he was a draft dodger came and forcefully removed him from his sick bed, on 2^nd October 1918, took him to St Thomas in a touring car, sent him to London on the L & P.S. to an army camp, where he was housed in a tent, When he was finally given a medical and his true condition found out he was sent home on the 5^th. By then his condition had turned to pneumonia from sleeping on the damp floor of a tent. He died on the 12^th. The community was so upset by this cruelty that a coroner’s inquest was held at Iona Station, 5^th November 1918 and the military officers had to appear and testify. The Following is quoted from The St. Thomas Times Journal, 6^th November 1918: “Following Major Weeke’s impassioned plea to the jury that they completely exonerate the military authorities from any guilt in the death of Stride. Crown Attorney McCrimmon waxed both eulogistic and sarcastic in his brilliant address. His caustic remarks regarding the purpose of the military service act and its usuages were particularly direct and chastising.” The jury in part – “we the jury find that the said Harland Ross Stride came to his death from pulmonary tuberculosis accelerated by the usage received from the military authorities while in their possession between Oct. 2 and Oct. 5, 1918.” However that was the only satisfaction the community received, the family could have sued but felt it was useless to do so.
[299] The St. Thomas Times Journal, 15 October 1918 – “Morley Stride, brother of the young man, (Harley Stride) is at present in the London Convalescent Hospital recovering from severe wounds received at the front, having been wounded twice. The news of his brother’s death has left him in a critical condition.” Morley died 23^rd October 1918.
