A Brief History of Cowal – McBride Cemetery

This cemetery is now nearly one hundred and fifty years in existence. The settlement of these back concessions of Dunwich started mainly during and after the 1840’s
Why was a cemetery started here, no where near any church? We may never know for sure, however it was near the townline between Dunwich and Southwold, which was quite a main road from Iona north to the River and on to Longwood (Melbourne later on). There was a definite need – Baptists could be buried at Iona near the church; Anglicans could bury in the Anglican cemeteries at Burwell Park or St. Peter’s. Some early settlers were buried at Fingal Cemetery, all quite a long way to travel. In 1843 the first settler, John McBride, on the farm to the south of this location, was killed by a falling tree and had to be buried in Black’s Cemetery west of Wallacetown. Some early settlers in the northwest corner of the Cowal community were buried across the river in the Murray Cemetery.

John McCallum, who owned the farm where the cemetery started, was a community minded man. His land was deep and suitable for graves, so he laid out about one acre for a cemetery, at the east side of a ravine which crossed his property facing onto the concession road, known then as the Fifth Concession and now as Aberdeen Line. This is the part of the north cemetery laid out so each stone faces the east, considered a necessity in those days. John McCallum sold his farm to Alfred Culver 14th September 1869, but retained the cemetery. Eight years later in 1877, he sold the one acre cemetery for $60.00 to David Crosson and Peter Duncanson. This deed sets out the procedure for annual meetings of plot holders and election of trustees.

The first trustees were David Crosson and Peter Duncanson. The early records of the cemetery were burned when the secretary, Peter Duncanson, lost his house to fire, so there is no record of the first survey and laying out of plots. It has been said that the first burial was that of Mrs. John McTavish (Nancy McLaren), who died 3rd May 1854. However there is a stone in the cemetery for Peter McNabb, aged one year and four months, son of Archie McNabb, who died 26th February 1852. So exactly who was buried here first or what year will never be known for sure.
In 1863 Cowal Post Office started in the home of Neil McBride, across the road to the east in Southwold, making this the centre of the community. A few years later Grant Silcox built a small general stone on the same lot in Dunwich, just east of the cemetery, bringing more people to the area. In the 1860’s and 70’s many people were buried in the new cemetery, the location of which was a convenience to the survivors.
After the records were burned the trustees drew the map we use from memory so some of the plots have no owners’ name on them or graves marked. Each spring the cemetery was burned off to get rid of the old grass and weeds, no doubt burning the wooden grave markers also. Finally the plot holders requested that the cemetery not be burned to avoid damaging stones.

The first expansion saw 33 plots in four rows laid out to the north of the first part. The second expansion saw five rows of plots laid out to the east side containing 61 plots. The third expansion was to the north of the first two, two rows of plots twenty in all. The fourth expansion was the addition of another row at the back, ten more plots. The fifth expansion was to the east again, two rows of plots, running north to south containing 30 more.
The small cemetery at the original site of Duff Church, Largie, was on clay land, and was never used very much and the Kerr Cemetery near the river on the Coyne Road was also not a very desirable site. During these years many people from Largie and Campbellton buried their loved ones at Cowal. In 1892 there was an agitation in Dutton to enlarge Black’s Cemetery, which was nearly full, or start a new cemetery. By 1894 an agreement had not been possible, with the trustees of Black’s Cemetery and a decision was made to start a new cemetery close to Dutton. In the Advance 16th April 1896 the survey of the new Fairview Cemetery was announced and people were invited to come on Arbor Day and help plant trees. This new cemetery was very popular from the start and many of the Largie and Campbellton families, whose old settlers were at Cowal, buried their later generations at Fairview.

In 1898, because the plots in the Cowal cemetery were nearly all sold and the cemetery could not expand on that site because of ravines on three sides, John L. McBride (son of the John McBride buried in Black’s cemetery in 1843) who owned the farm to the south, on the other side of the road, with the same excellent land, laid out 112 plots, one rod square. The first burial was that of John McTavish’s second wife (Christina McLarty). This cemetery was also known as Cowal Cemetery but was run by a separate board.

In 1937 a discussion was held about uniting the boards but it was the next year, 2nd June 1938 before the cemeteries were joined. It was at that time the name Cowal-McBride Cemetery Association was adopted. With their resources joined they added another 48 plots to the south side. That same year, 1938, they built a better building to be used as a waiting room as well as a caretaker’s shelter. Lined with varnished tongue and groove lumber, with built in seats around the edges and heated with a small stove, it was a great convenience for people waiting for funerals to arrive, on cold winter days. There is a list of all those who donated money to build this little building and the labor was donated – a real community project.
Time marched on and there was soon to be a shortage of graves again, so in 1970 the land from the east cemetery fence to the townline, was purchased from Preston McBride. Some of this area was low, necessitating drawing in fill from the Muskoka gravel pits, to bring it up level with the rest of the cemetery. This was surveyed by Graham, Berman & Associates Ltd of St. Thomas, Consulting Engineers. This plan is dated 16th November 1970 and provided another 980 graves.

The Cowal-McBride Cemetery Association is run by a board of trustees, four from Dunwich and three from Southwold. In 2003 this board is made up of A. Bruce McCallum, Chairman; Bob Patterson, David McCallum and Donald L. Carroll, Secretary-Treasurer, from Dunwich; Donald Miller, Claire Oldham and John Smith, from Southwold.
Additional research notes have been attached to the transcription by the late Donald L. Carroll.

COWAL-MCBRIDE CEMETERY – SOUTH SIDE OF THE ROAD
AT ONE TIME MCBRIDE CEMETERY
This cemetery has many unnecessary numbers for corner stones and other stones without names or dates of any kind in the original transcribing done in 1981. For this reason many numbers will not appear, in order to retain the number of actual stones the same as in the original index.
Also many headstones were listed far away from others on the same plot. As far as possible these will be listed with their mother stone without using their number from the first index.
Pay no attention to a gap in the list of numbers.

By this time the remains were hard to move however they were moved to the south cemetery and are at stone # 1115.
[209] There is quite a mix up here and hard to straighten out. The father of William and Thomas Roach, was John Roach, who died about 1866 (the year his will was probated) He may be buried in the plot next to this one because it was deeded to Mr. Roach. There may have been no stone for him because it was to go up after his widow died. His wife was Mary Ross. After John’s death Mary married in 1867, Joseph Clark, a widower whose 1st wife was Lavine Lodge and had two children, Enoch and Jane. When Jane was 19 she married William H. Roach, Mary’s son by her 1st marriage. When Joseph Clark died Mary buried him in this plot with her sons, both of whom died before she did. Mary (Ross) (Roach) Clark died in February 1916, aged 97 years and was buried in Cowal Cemetery. The Dutton Advance – 17th February 1916. No marker exists for her. Since these are the only Roach plots in the cemetery and her 2nd husband is buried here, it seems safe to assume that she is in this plot or the one next to it with her 1st husband. William Roach and Jane Clark had one daughter, Mrs. Neil G. McMillan, of Rodney, who later moved to Yorkton, Sask., where they kept store. Mrs. William H. Roach (Jane Clark) may also be buried here with her husband or she may have died while staying with her daughter in Saskatchewan and been buried in the West.

He returned to the home of his parents in a very sick condition. The military police, who must have thought he was a draft dodger came and forcefully removed him from his sick bed, on 2nd October 1918, took him to St Thomas in a touring car, sent him to London on the L & P.S. to an army camp, where he was housed in a tent, When he was finally given a medical and his true condition found out he was sent home on the 5th. By then his condition had turned to pneumonia from sleeping on the damp floor of a tent. He died on the 12th. The community was so upset by this cruelty that a coroner’s inquest was held at Iona Station, 5th November 1918 and the military officers had to appear and testify. The Following is quoted from The St. Thomas Times Journal, 6th November 1918: “Following Major Weeke’s impassioned plea to the jury that they completely exonerate the military authorities from any guilt in the death of Stride. Crown Attorney McCrimmon waxed both eulogistic and sarcastic in his brilliant address. His caustic remarks regarding the purpose of the military service act and its usuages were particularly direct and chastising.” The jury in part – “we the jury find that the said Harland Ross Stride came to his death from pulmonary tuberculosis accelerated by the usage received from the military authorities while in their possession between Oct. 2 and Oct. 5, 1918.” However that was the only satisfaction the community received, the family could have sued but felt it was useless to do so.
