Trinity Anglican Cemetery is connected with Trinity Anglican Church, Port Burwell, and is located on the grounds of the historic church, at the corner of Strachan and Pitt Streets.
Anglican Church services were first conducted in Port Burwell in February 1836, by a traveling minister. Shortly afterwards, a church building was erected through the efforts of Col. Mahlon Burwell, and was ready for services in April, 1836. The property was deeded to the Church by Col. Burwell in 1840.

According to a history of the church written in 1936, “the earliest date on a tombstone in the cemetery is 1839, but is was common knowledge among the old-time villagers that some sailors who had been drowned in Lake Erie were buried in the northeast corner before this date. A son of the first Rector, the Rev. Boulton Read, is buried west of the church. It is interesting to notice that during Dr. J. Schulte’s rectorship (1869-1878), a ruling was made that a fee of two dollars per grave be charged to non-pew holders. At an early vestry meeting, Easter Monday, 1843, a fence for the cemetery was considered and a subscription list opened. During the rectorship of the Rev. John Kerr, (1929-1933), a cemetery board was organized, which aimed at a sum of two thousand dollars as principal to be invested by the Synod, the interest of which was to be used entirely for its upkeep”.

Since the cemetery was first recorded in the early 1980’s by the Elgin County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, some stones which were broken or in disrepair were moved from their original location in the cemetery and placed in two concrete pads at the west side of the church. When the transcription was revised in 2002, a notation was made if the stone had been moved. We have labeled the concrete pads “A” and “B”, with rows 1 through 5 in each. A diagram has been included here to show the concrete pad numbering along with the original stone number in our earlier transcription.
