Firby Cemetery was started as a burial ground for a Wesleyan Methodist congregation that had erected a building known as Benson’s Chapel. The chapel was located on the north east corner of lot 1, concession 10, but the location for a cemetery was chosen one mile south. It was used as a burial place before the deed was given for that purpose, as the earliest burial marked on a stone occurred in 1850.

The property for the cemetery was sold for five shillings by Thomas Firby of Windsor on July 19, 1855, to the Trustees of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Bayham, later called Benson’s Chapel, for the use of a public burying ground. The trustees at the time were Hiram Moss, Joseph Firby, George Silverthorn, William Kipp Jr., John Medcalf, Samuel McKenney & Thomas T. Cascaddan.

There have not been many recent burials in Firby Cemetery, and in fact, years ago the cemetery was neglected and became overgrown with weeds and lilacs. Several years ago, members of the community, assisted by Township Council’s direction under the Cemetery Act, began a fund for the clean up and maintenance of the pioneer burying ground.
