Ford Cemetery is a “border cemetery”, its stone records documenting early families of Aldborough Township, Elgin County and Orford Township, Kent County. The large MacCall stone (#111) also documents familial ties to the Wigle and Kratz/Scratch families of Essex County. In Orford’s Story 1827-1977 (compiled as part of the Sesquicentennial Celebration of the first town meeting, 1827, edited by Charles L. D.

McLaren) on pages 48 and 49 appear the names from the official patent records of land owners of Orford Township whose final resting places are to be found in Ford Cemetery. On page 61, of the above publication, additional information is found which states that Ford Cemetery was used before a burying ground was established at Duart, Orford Township, Kent County.

Tradition has Ford Cemetery dating from 1823 with the internment of Mary Ann, only daughter of Thomas and Altha Ford. However, in the Register of Baptisms, Marriages & Deaths at St. Thomas, U.C. commencing with the establishment of the mission in July 1824 (Ontario Historical Society Papers and Records, Volume IX [1910] page 129), the children of Thomas & Altha Ford – William, Mary Ann, Robert, David and Henry – were baptized 9 September 1824 by Reverend Alexander Mackintosh, Rector and Missionary. The Ford Cemetery derives its name from the Ford farm upon whose land it is situated: Concession 12, Lot B, North Talbot Road (NTR) Survey, Aldborough Township, Elgin County.

Brief History of the Ford Family:

Circa 1808 Thomas Ford (c1774-1844) emigrated from Edinburgh, Scotland to Vermont, U.S.A., with two small children and his second wife who died shortly after their arrival.

While still in Vermont, Thomas Ford married Altha Sheppard (c1792-1869). They moved to New York State where Thomas engaged in the brewery business.

At the outbreak of the War of 1812, Thomas was pressed into service for the American cause. After the war, circa 1817, he moved his family to Upper Canada and settled on today’s Lot B, Concession 12, NTR, Aldborough Township, Elgin County, securing the title to this land from Colonel Talbot on 27th February 1824.

On July 30, 1844, Thomas Ford died and was interred in the Ford Cemetery.
